Lit: Penguin 70 series

For those of a more Sagittarian literary appetite or for folks who like their reading like they like their sushi...raw and in small aesthetically pleasing doses, I highly recommend the Penguin 70 series. This intriguing collection of 70 short texts by many of Penguin's most "important" authors is a good opportunity to peruse some excellent works that you may well have missed. Some are collections of short works other excerpts from larger works. Each book tops out near 100 pages making them both mouthwateringly cheap and concise. Fiction, poetry, philosophy, and everything in between can be found between the stylish covers of these delightful little books. From great tidbits of literary sashimi from heavies like Borges and Joyce to the caustic social commentary of HST or Noam Chomsky there is something for everyone.
Among other notables are a fabulous collection of totally brilliant and equally depressing shorts by the recently re-immortalized Truman Capote. As well as my mother's favorite, a quiet semi-narrative ode to the flanuer by Virginia Wolfe.
So whether you a less than exorbitant entertainment budget, are looking to peruse new authors without any long-term commitment or simply find your self at a loss for respect in literary circles I highly recommend this series. It should be noted that you would be hard pressed to find these little gems on the west side of the Atlantic. God bless the Internet.
